TRADITIONAL MAORI HEALING
Traditional Maori healing also known as Rongoaa Maori is the traditional healing system of Maori. It is centred on oral transmissions of knowledge, diversity of practice and the spiritual dimension of health. Rongoaa Maori encompasses Rongoaa (herbal remedies) mirimiri (physical therapies) and karakia (spiritual healing and prayer). To many Maori people, Rongoaa Maori is based on a wholistic model that incorporates the physical, emotional, family & spiritual aspects of health and allows for the transmission of culture and history to occur. It is an important aspect in terms of health care in Te Ao Maori (Maori worldview) and is complimentary to current Western medicine.
There is a growing body of evidence to suggest Maori have poorer health outcomes, die younger and have higher rates of chronic disease than other New Zealanders. Poorer access to health services for Maori is one of the contributing factors to inequalities in outcomes. The Wairoa community is 65% Maori - so access to holistic services is vital. The Wairoa PHO has, supported traditional Maori health practitioners in Wairoa for the past three years and continues to do so. This service is funded through Service to Improve Access (SIA) funding.
There are around 240 Maori health providers delivering a range of health and disability services throughout New Zealand. These services, which are often characterised by Maori delivery frameworks, are available to all throughout each community. In Wairoa, we have four traditional Maori healing providers, who offer a range of Rongoaa Maori services. A list of their details is as follows.
